What Are AICTE Activity Points?
Introduced a few years ago under the AICTE guidelines, the Activity Point Program is a mandatory requirement for all VTU engineering students to graduate. The goal is simple: to ensure engineering students do not just spend four years locked in computer labs, but instead engage with society, develop soft skills, and contribute to their local communities.
If you are a regular B.E/B.Tech student (admitted to the 1st year), you are required to earn exactly 100 Activity Points over your four-year degree. If you are a lateral entry student (Diploma to Degree), you need to earn 75 Activity Points across three years.
Failure to earn these points means your degree will be withheld, regardless of your SGPA or placement offers. Do not treat this lightly.
How to Earn Points Seamlessly
Earning 100 points sounds intimidating, but the list of eligible activities is massive and incredibly flexible. You do not need to do them all in your final year — in fact, you should spread them out to avoid panic in the 8th semester.
- NSS/NCC Programs: Participating in National Service Scheme or National Cadet Corps camps is the most traditional way. A two-week camp can net you up to 60 points in one go.
- Hackathons and Tech Competitions: Participating in state or national-level hackathons like the Smart India Hackathon (SIH) earns you significant points (20-40 points depending on the level). Winning them earns even more.
- Blood Donation Drives: Simply donating blood or organizing a blood donation drive at your college can earn you 10-15 points.
- MOOCs (NPTEL/Coursera): Completing certified online courses in areas of social sciences, humanities, or management (not core technical subjects) often counts for 20 points per course.
- Village Surveys and Rural Development: Many colleges organize weekend trips to nearby villages where students survey local technical challenges (like water purification or soil testing). These community service projects are heavily weighted by the AICTE.
- College Fest Organization: Being a core committee member organizing your college's technical or cultural festival can yield up to 20 points.
The Documentation Trap
The biggest mistake students make is doing the activities but failing to collect the necessary proof. You cannot just tell your HOD that you planted 50 trees; you need documentation.
For every activity, you must maintain:
- A formal certificate of participation or completion from a recognized authority (NGO, College Principal, Event Organizer).
- Geotagged photographs of you actively participating in the event.
- A brief 2-page report summarizing what you did, the total hours spent, and the outcomes.
When to Upload
Your college will periodically open an internal portal to upload these documents, which are then verified by your faculty coordinator and sent to the VTU database. The best strategy is to aim for 25 points per academic year. Finish your 100 points by the end of your 6th semester so your final year can be dedicated purely to your major project and campus placements.
