The Dreaded "Curveball" Paper

It happens every few semesters. You sit down in the examination hall, confident in your preparation, only to open the question paper and see topics you have never heard of. Whispers break out in the hall. The question is clearly from the old scheme or a completely different branch. Panic is the natural reaction, but it is the wrong reaction.

Handling "out of syllabus" questions is a test of your temperament. VTU has a specific, documented protocol for dealing with these errors, and if you understand how to navigate it, an out-of-syllabus question can actually guarantee you free marks.

Rule 1: Never Leave It Blank

The single biggest mistake students make is saying, "This is out of syllabus, so I won't attempt it. They have to give me grace marks anyway." This is absolutely false.

VTU's official policy on grace marks for erroneous or out-of-syllabus questions clearly states that grace marks are only awarded to students who attempted the question. If you leave the page blank, the university assumes you simply did not know the answer and chose an alternative question (or skipped it). To register your attempt, you must write the Question Number clearly, copy the question itself, and write at least a few relevant lines about the general topic.

How to "Attempt" an Unknown Question

If the question is "Explain the architecture of the XYZ Microcontroller" (and XYZ is out of syllabus), do not write a song or a letter to the evaluator. That annoys them and can lead to penalties.

Instead, write about the generic architecture of microcontrollers. Draw a basic block diagram showing a CPU, Memory, and I/O ports. Write down fundamental definitions. The goal is to fill half a page with vaguely relevant technical information. When the university later issues a circular authorizing grace marks for that specific question, the evaluator will see your attempt and immediately award you full marks, regardless of what you actually wrote. It is the easiest 10 marks you will ever earn.

The Psychology of the Remaining Paper

An out-of-syllabus question in Module 1 often mentally destroys students, causing them to perform poorly on Modules 2 to 5, which are perfectly normal. Recognize the situation for what it is: an administrative error, not a reflection of your preparation. Secure your attempt on the erroneous question quickly, leave a blank page just in case, and immediately move on to the modules you know well to rebuild your confidence.
